Rumpus Room are defintely living up to its eponymous ‘rumpus’ this week. Last Friday the artist-led youth organisation, perhaps best known for their play sessions and open studios, did a Beyoncé and surprise released an EP by The Suits on their newly created Rumpus Records label.

The Suits are a foursome comprised of young people who have been involved with Rumpus Room in various capacities. They performed at Rumpus Room’s fundraiser last summer at The Glad Cafe along with thirteen other bands and musicians, with over half the acts being young people with some of them playing their first ever gigs.

“Through facilitating this fundraiser, alongside organiser and sound wizard Charlie Knox, we were reminded of the importance of opportunities for young people to express themselves in this way.” said Rumpus Room in an Instagram post promoting the EP launch. Rumpus Record was set-up directly in response to continue collaborating with the young people who performed at the fundraiser with the hope to expand this to other people in the future.

On a post on their blog Rumpus Room say about the launch of the record label:

“Rumpus Records exists to help young musicians to record, mix and master their own original material.  We work with groups and solo artists of all styles helping them to hone their craft and find their sound. We seek to instil a spirit of DIY independence and sonic exploration and equip participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to release their work into the world in a way that they feel best represents them.”

The four track EP harks back to nineties and noughties American indie with the necessary yearning vocals singing about how they like your baggy style, plucky guitar and fuzzy cover art. It is crazy good for a first EP from the young local residents.

The band will be performing at Strangefield in Bridgeton tomorrow (16th February). Head on down to hear the band live.

Rumpus Room will next be releasing music by one of its committee artists and will be opening applications for aspiring musicians to get their music released on the label.

In August 2023 we hosted an all-ages all-day gig fundraiser for Rumpus Room at the Glad Café, and put on a line up of 13 bands and musicians. It was a lovely way to get together and celebrate Rumpus and the creativity of young people involved in the project.

Rumpus Records is a collaboration between Rumpus Room and Charlie Knox @practicegoodpractice (Practice Good Practice, Semispecific Ensemble).
