Join the Board of Greater Govanhill CIC
Greater Govanhill is at a really exciting moment. We’re about to publish our 20th issue, our Community Newsroom is thriving as a local hub, and our founder is beginning to share the lessons of our work with other communities across Scotland.
We’re looking for new people to join our Board of Directors – to help the organisation enter into its next phase.
We are looking for board members who can commit to a three-year term and volunteer at least half a day per month (with flexibility to give more time when required).
Board meetings usually last 90 minutes and are held every three months, either in person in our Community Newsroom or online/hybrid.
We are particularly keen to hear from people who:
Live in or have a strong connection to Govanhill
Reflect the diversity of our neighbourhood – we especially encourage applications from people from under-represented backgrounds
Bring experience in one or more of the following areas: finance, journalism, audience building, communications, membership management, HR, or business leadership
Have some board or governance experience (desirable but not essential)
We know board roles can sometimes feel inaccessible, so we offer an optional £25 per meeting to help cover costs of attending to reduce barriers to attendance.
About Greater Govanhill
Greater Govanhill is an award-winning, not-for-profit community magazine and media organisation, registered as a community interest company. We produce a free bimonthly magazine and website, run journalism training and events, and manage The Community Newsroom – a collaborative media space that’s open to the public.
Our aim is simple: to tell local stories, amplify diverse voices, and bring people together.
Our Values
Our five values guide everything we do:
We Create Space for Connection – in the newsroom, in our magazine, and in our community.
We Serve the Community – letting local needs shape our work and being responsive, positive and practical.
We Care – for our team, our contributors, and our neighbours. We prioritise wellbeing, kindness and hospitality.
We Listen – with openness and curiosity, making sure every voice has space to be heard.
We Prioritise Diverse Voices – amplifying stories that are often overlooked, and making space for those who are too often excluded.
We’re looking for board members who can help us live out these values at a governance level and who share our belief in community-led media.
What’s Involved?
Our Board meets every three months, supporting the team with strategic direction, governance, and decision-making. Usually board members take it in turns to chair the meetings, but we would be open to having a fixed chair if that was of interest. Meetings last around 90 minutes and can be attended in person at the Community Newsroom or online/hybrid.
In between, board members may get involved in specific projects such as recruitment, funding applications, event planning, supporting team members, or acting as a sounding board for new ideas.
Time commitment: at least half a day per month, with flexibility to give more when required.
What’s in it for you?
Being part of the Greater Govanhill board is an opportunity to:
Make a difference – play a key role in supporting an award-winning, community-led media organisation through an exciting period of transition.
Learn and grow – develop your skills in governance, leadership, finance, fundraising, and strategy in a supportive environment.
Build connections – join a network of committed people who care deeply about Govanhill, and connect with wider community media movements across Scotland.
Share your expertise – bring your knowledge and perspective to help shape the future of Greater Govanhill and ensure our values stay at the heart of everything we do.
Gain experience – for those newer to governance, it’s a chance to build confidence and learn how boards work, with peer support and optional training.
The legal bit
Greater Govanhill is registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC). Like all companies, we have a Board of Directors who are legally responsible for making sure the organisation is well run and meets its obligations. As a CIC, there are some extra responsibilities too — mainly making sure that everything we do continues to deliver a benefit to the community.
In practice, being a director means:
Acting in good faith and in a way that best serves Greater Govanhill’s community purpose.
Using your skills and judgement to make informed decisions.
Taking care to act responsibly with our people, partnerships, and money.
Avoiding conflicts of interest and being open if they arise.
Helping the organisation maintain high standards of transparency and conduct.
These duties are set out in the Companies Act 2006 and are standard for all CIC directors. You don’t need to be a legal expert – training and guidance will be provided to make sure you’re comfortable with what’s expected.
