Greater Govanhill shortlisted for two Refugee Festival Scotland Media Awards
Two Greater Govanhill articles have been shortlisted for Refugee Festival Scotland Media Awards, which celebrate powerful, responsible coverage of refugee and asylum issues. Among the nominees are local artists and writers sharing stories of resilience, hope, and the fight against systemic barriers.

Greater Govanhill has been shortlisted at this year's Refugee Festival Scotland Media Awards. The annual awards celebrate coverage of issues around forced migration and its impact on individuals and communities.
Artist, Sadia Sikandar is one of three Greater Govanhill writers shortlisted for the Independent Media category for her article, ‘Facing Hatred With Hope’.’, which documents the challenges she’s faced as a refugee in Scotland, from the emotional toll of societal hostility, systemic barriers, navigating unfamiliar systems and finding employment.
Nominated alongside Bowling Green director Tabassum Niamat and Maryhill Development Officer Pinar Aksu, for their co-written piece, ‘These are our Neighbours’: Three years on from Kenmure Street, what’s changed? This reflects on the day hundreds gathered to challenge Scotland’s hostile immigration system and the concerning changes in the system that followed.
Scottish Refugee Council, which organises the awards, said: “In an increasingly polarised world, accurate, responsible reporting on refugee and asylum issues has never been more important. We are delighted to honour the work of all the journalists in Scotland covering refugee and asylum issues with care and integrity.“
Greater Govanhill has been a runner-up in previous years’ features, local media and radio categories and was praised for its coverage of the bravery and resilience of people rebuilding their lives here in Scotland,
Several other local organisations and writers are among this year’s nominees, including journalist and Greater Govanhill contributor Rory MacNeish, The Ferret’s Billy Briggs and MILK.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 11 June, with nominations judged by a range of experts, including the National Union of Journalists.
