Issue 2 Published!

Issue 2 was published on the 20 March, which also happens to be UN Anti-Racism Day. This feels particularly important this year, given the recent debates about racism in our media. We’re proud to be an anti-racist publication, and purposefully set out to be an inclusive magazine that celebrates all the different cultures, ethnicities and languages which makes Govanhill so unique.

Around 45 members of the local community have contributed to this issue, hailing from 10 different countries. We’re publishing 35 original articles and besides English we’ve included articles in Arabic, Polish, Romanian, Kurdish, Czech and Farsi.

This magazine would not be possible without the support of our community. If you want to help keep it going, sign up to be a member for as little as £3 per month: greatergovanhill.com/shop

A special thanks goes to our advertisers: Bike For Good, GOBike, Gulabi, Inhouse Events, Kieron Redmond, Rumpus Room, South East Integration Network, Scottish Refugee Council, Studio70 and WEvolution. If you’d like to advertise in the next issue, contact: notices@greatergovanhill.com

Letter from the Editor

As the daffodils start to push their way into Queen’s Park, we can hopefully start to move forward and leave this hard winter behind us. Being plunged back into a strict lockdown right after the first magazine came out has been tough on us all. But it’s been heartwarming to hear stories of how Issue 1 helped to make you feel more connected to your neighbourhood – and your neighbours.

In this issue, we take on rubbish, and what can be done about it. This is not a problem unique to Govanhill, but it still impacts the area. We also hear what it means to have refugee status and be able to vote in Scotland for the first time. There’s a chance to learn more about the history and culture of the Roma community. And we go hunting for ghost signs and wally closes. There are all the regulars too, covering music, history, and food. But most of all, the magazine is about community, and how ours continues to grow stronger.

We are going to print right after a high-profile debate around racism in the media. There is a serious lack of diversity in journalism. And when news is viewed through a single lens, we only hear a fraction of the story. This magazine was launched to provide a platform for those voices that too often go unheard. And we’re excited to announce that we’ll soon be launching journalism skills training to empower more local people to get involved.
