New build residential development at Butterbiggins Road is officially underway

The construction of a new flatted social housing development in Govanhill began this week with the ceremonial breaking of the ground, which is the first symbolic shovelling of dirt on the site to mark the occasion.

On-going construction in Govanhill

The previously derelict sight on Butterbiggins Road (near the Royal Mail post office) has been a sight for sore eyes for sometime now. But the good news is, Clark Contracts, who have been contracted to build new social housing for Govanhill Housing Association (GHA), have completed the work needed on the site to enable construction to go ahead.

Govanhill Housing Association joined main contractor Clark Contracts at the site on Butterbiggins Road for the official groundbreaking ceremony, a tradition which marks a significant milestone in any construction project.

Construction of the new 24 energy-efficeint homes is well underway, and when completed, the five-storey flats will include nine three-bedroom apartments, ten two-bedroom apartments, and five one-bedroom apartments, as well as accessible flats to accommodate a variety of residents seeking social housing.

The development, designed by Coltart Earley Architecture, will also feature designated parking spaces alongside the implementation of energy-efficient design principles. Two normal car parking spaces are proposed plus two spaces allocated to ground floor wheelchair-accessible flats.

In a statement, Audrey Flannagan, tenant and vice chair of GHA, said they are “pleased to be building another 24 homes for social rent” as the city “grapples with an acute housing crisis". This project is a step towards addressing the ongoing housing needs within the Govanhill community.

The development is due to be completed in early spring 2026.
