Kids Winter Activity Ideas

After joining one of our young reporter workshops this year, Govanhill resident Nara wanted to write about what to do when you are bored in the winter holidays.

Being at home and doing nothing during the holidays is no fun at all. This list of fun holiday tips will be sure to get your brain working well. From indoor to outdoor, creative to active, make your winter fun!

Do some art

Take some paper and a pencil and let your imagination go wild by drawing anything you can think of from outside – still life to crazy abstract. Inside or outside, you will always find inspiration. You could even make Christmas cards or decorations.

Have a home cinema

Get your comfiest pyjamas on, find your favourite pillow or toys and make your favourite snacks. Find a screen and get comfy whilst waiting for your favourite film to begin.

Have a home games night

Invite your brothers, sisters, family and friends to a fun-filled game playing session. Grab some board games, card games and piece of paper to keep score, then get your game brain on!

Go on a nature walk

Get on your hat, scarf and warm clothes and go on a hunt for all nature’s finest winter treats. See if you can spot pine cones, holly berries and even winter birds like robins. Go to any local greenspace but I would recommend Queen’s park or Maxwell Park.

Go to the library

Walk to your local library and read anything you like from horror, to non-fiction, to fantasy or romance and find yourself in book heaven. Libraries have a great selection of things to do, from the computers for free, to resting on a comfy chair.

Do a show

Get your friends, brothers and sisters together and plan a creative show about something real or fictional. Get creative and choose costumes, do makeup, pick characters and have fun.

Have a home spa

Get some bubble bath, bathscent and shampoo and have a fun spa bath. Make some face scrub and put some cucumber on your eyes then relax and unwind.

Make a magazine or a comic

Express your inner journalist and write or draw to create your own magazine or comic. Plan everything from headers to pictures and make a great magazine.

Give the gift of good news this Christmas by signing up a loved one for a Greater Govanhill annual membership.
