Govanhill Spring Clean planned for 27 April

Local residents, organisations, charities and businesses are coming together for a Govanhill Spring Clean event.

The plan is to meet at the Al-Farooq Education and Community Centre on Dixon Ave in Govanhill on the 27 April at 10:30am. They day will begin with a briefing before teams of folk will head out to pick up litter. Volunteers will meet back at the community centre for a community lunch at 12:15.

Speaking about why he wanted to organise something like this, Gordon, a Govanhill resident said: "Litter just encourages more litter and is bad for morale."

While fellow local resident Karen said: "I'm doing it for the parents having to steer buggies and small children round piles of rubbish and rubbish-filled puddles."

As well as local residents, a number of community groups and organisations are also getting behind the day.

Greater Govanhill said: “Litter picking may not address the systemic issues that cause the build up of litter in our communities, or underfunding of our cleansing services, but it is an opportunity to bring folk together who care about making a difference. We’re hoping that this will provide a chance not only make an immediate improvement to our local environment, but also build momentum to tackle some of the bigger issues we face.”

The idea is that this first event will become a monthly clean up on the last Saturday of each month. Sign up to be kept informed here.
