The Govanhill International Festival and Carnival is in its fifth year. Initially planned as a response to the vilification of migrants within our community, the festival has evolved into a vibrant, diverse and interdisciplinary celebration of what makes Govanhill unique.

Packed with news, interviews, features, recipes and more there is something for everyone in this issue of Greater Govanhill. Over 50 members of the community helped us to produce and distribute this issue and we couldn’t be more proud of it.

The latest episode of our monthly radio programme aired on 2 July. The show took a look at a number of ways in which community is expressed in our area and included music from a variety of local artists.

Paolo Plotegher & Sarah Bower, both from the Youth Community Support Agency (YCSA), speak to Ruth Cape of the South East Integration Network about projects being offered to young black and minority ethnic people, and their parents and carers, in Pollokshields and Govanhill.

Those concerned about the future of community gardening on the Agnew Lane plot had reason to feel a measure of relief as city planning officials temporarily halted efforts to begin construction on the site.

In Issue 2, we took a look at the different ways communities and local organisations are tackling cleansing issues in the neighbourhood. Living Rent, Scotland’s tenants union have been taking the fight to the council and demanding action.

Issue 2 of the magazine took a deep dive into the issue of rubbish, and what we can do about it - looking both at the causes and the solutions to cleansing issues, which effect all areas of Glasgow, not just Govanhill.

In Issue 1, cycling campaigner Iona Shepherd wrote about the difference that the South City Way could make to the neighbourhood and addressed some of the key criticisms levelled against it.

In Issue 1 of Greater Govanhill magazine, Marek Balog wrote about the new initiative by local organisation, Community Renewal to make sure that Roma people are at the heart of decision making when it comes to their community.

There’s nothing quite like your grandmother’s cooking to transport you to a more familiar setting. In this series, we ask Govanhill locals to share a recipe reminiscent of their homeland, starting with this traditional dish from Transylvania.
