Local Residents Stage 'Read-In's Calling on Glasgow Life to Reopen Local Libraries

Residents of Pollokshields and Langside are staging a 'Read-In' every Saturday from 11am-12noon to show support for their local libraries which, along with Govanhill library, all currently remain closed. Below local resident, Beth Dynowski, explains why.

Glasgow Life recently announced its plans for a phased opening schedule for libraries, cultural venues and sports facilities which has been welcomed by citizens across Glasgow. However, Pollokshields, Langside and Govanhill Libraries among other venues, have not been given a date.

These three libraries are all within close vicinity of one another, are well used and are home to a diverse range of users - from children after school, young parents, adults and the elderly - and they provide access to books, information, computers and the internet and vital social contact. They are also a focal point for many local groups.

Residents decided to get together to show their love of their local libraries. Those in attendance are asked to stay two metres apart by sitting within designated hearts, to wear a mask where appropriate and bring along a book to read for the hour. There is also a 'replacement library service' which a local mum has made, with free books for swapping each week.

Glasgow Life has stated that they do not plan to close these libraries but they also do not give any indication of when they might open. The safety of staff is paramount and understandably, Glasgow Life need to take a careful approach to reopening.

At this current time, there will inevitably be a pause on reopening public spaces. However, if Scotland is serious about considering a wellbeing economy, libraries and sports facilities are at the heart of this. We very much hope that this will be taken into consideration when looking at how to manage the deficit brought about by Covid-19.

Currently, particularly as we approach winter, the options for accessing free cultural and educational facilities is extremely limited. The impact libraries have on addressing the widening attainment gap in schools as well as on wellbeing, mental health and combating the epidemic of isolation that Covid has brought with it, cannot be underestimated.

Our 'Read In's are a small gesture at showing our support for these libraries as vital to our communities in the long term.
