Support the workers, join the National Day of Action

With the cost of living crisis set to worsen over the coming weeks, workers need our support more than ever. Becki Menzies of Southside Strike Solidarity writes on the need to take a stand.

As the saying goes, if they come for one of us, they come for all of us. We’re seeing attacks on working people across the country and it’s only going to get worse with the UK Government today announcing plans to restrict workers’ right to further strike action.

Not only that, the rich are being given handouts whilst the rest of us are told to suck it up.

With the resumption of strikes next week, it’s time to get out on the picket lines.

Southside Strike Solidarity, the local branch of the Glasgow-wide strike solidarity movement, has been organising members of the local community to show up and support local striking workers.

Here in Govanhill, local post office workers represented by the CWU will be on strike from 7am - 9.30am on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October at the Victoria Road post office depot. Come along and support your postie!

On Saturday 1 October there will be a national day of action across the country to protest against the energy price cap and erosion of our living standards, with a rally planned from 12pm in Glasgow’s George Square.
The day of action is being coordinated by Enough is Enough nationally and Power to the People in Glasgow.
The Enough is Enough campaign was formed in direct response to the cost of greed crisis and ignited a mass movement of working class people up and down the country in just a matter of weeks. The Glasgow launch rally was attended by approx 1000 people.

The campaign has 5 demands:

  1. A real pay rise

  2. Slash energy bills

  3. End food poverty

  4. Decent homes for all

  5. Tax the rich

Power to the People Glasgow is campaigning to ‘Freeze Prices, Not People’ in response to the energy price cap and soaring costs.

On the morning of Saturday 1 October, railway workers represented by the main transport unions will be on strike from 7am - 12pm outside Central Station.

We need as many people as we can get to come along to the picket lines and show solidarity with workers. And then it’s onto George Square to show the government Enough is Enough!
