The Thriving Govanhill Fund is open for voting

 

Thriving Places Govanhill are awarding grants between £1000-2500 for community initiatives around Govanhill that improve health and wellbeing, with the recipients being decided by the local community. Read our handy guide to all the initiatives (including us!) and how to vote.

Time is ticking down for members of the Govanhill community to vote in The Thriving Govanhill Fund. On 5th October, voting will close. The fund will be decided through participatory budgeting which, simply put, is a way of giving some decision-making power on spending a budget to the citizens it affects.

There are two different categories, the Kickstart grants (£1000) and the Action grants (£2500). You can vote in both categories.

Each project in contention for Thriving Govanhill Fund have to fit with at least two of the following eight health and wellbeing outcomes:

  • Tackling Loneliness

  • Food and Nutrition

  • Growing and Greenspace

  • Improving Mental Health

  • Improving Physical Health

  • Increasing Fitness

  • Supporting Young People (up to 21)

  • Supporting Older People (over 60)

The Kickstart projects in the running are:

Mood yoga (K1)

Mood Yoga will facilitate weekly yoga classes for teenagers in Govanhill free of charge at Studio 70 on Victoria Road. Priority will be given to those from low-income families. The grant will cover venue hire, teacher costs and allow us to create and print yoga flashcards for the young people to take home.

Roma Men’s Group (k2)

The funding will support the Roma Men’s Group to fund sporting activities (such as football, badminton and swimming) over a 30 week period that promote physical and mental wellbeing.

The Sewing Roma group is already an established group within the Govanhill community that engages women to expand social networking, tackle isolation and learn new skills. With the funding, the group would buy an additional three sewing machines and an embroidery machine so they could expand the number of participants and members can learn new skills.

30 south annadale: Make our backcourt beautiful again (k4)

The fund will help to create a clean, beautiful, uplifting space for the court’s residents to enjoy, congregate and become a community again. It will flourish with wild flowers and fragrant herbs, contribute to the residents’ physical and mental well-being.

Women well-being group (k5)

The fund will help Roma women from Govanhill and their young children to come together in a safe environment to participate in different activities and to explore Glasgow and wider Scotland.

Queens park chess club (k6)

The chess club, which has seen their numbers triple this year and include a cross-section of members from all walks of life, will use the fund to invest in equipment and materials, digital information and public event.

our rights, our communities (k7)

This self-managed group of women with lived experience of the asylum system want to expand their peer-support group. They will use the money to pay for a warm, safe place to meet and provide travel reimbursements.

The next step 4u (k8)

The purpose of the NEXT STEP 4 U is to provide an empathetic ear in a community led project. Promoting mental health and well-being through counselling and other holistic therapies.

kin kitchen (k9)

Kin Kitchen is a community food project designed to be reflective and receptive of the needs of the community. The fund will support five members of the local community collaborating on recipes and a recipe book before hosting a community meal.

govanhill roma youth project (k10)

The young people in the project have developed a course for participants to write lyrics about things that concern them, choose or make beats, record and produce tracks to a professional level, and create video content to enable them to post on social media.

Glasgow soundbath (k11)

The fund will bring soundbaths to older people in care homes to reduce stress and anxiety, promote a sense of well-being, and create a shared cohesive and restorative group experience.

greater govanhill (k12)

The fund will be used to work with specialist tutors and practitioners to develop a number of educational resources that can used in conjunction with old copies of Greater Govanhill. The resources would be used for teaching ESOL, English language comprehension, and journalism skills in Govanhill and secondary schools.

No. 1 befriending agency (k13)

The fund will support 5 Govanhill based elderly isolated residents who live alone by matching them with a trained volunteer for 1-2-1 befriending telephone calls and in person meetings over a twelve week period.

cathkin blazes (k14)

This football team of women and non-binary people will use the grant to provide two pitches every week for 9 weeks for their popular beginner-friendly football group, which will allow the group to play into the winter.


The Action projects in the running are:

The Feel Good Women’s Group (A1)

To provide further exercise classes. The classes improve both physical and mental health and reduce social isolation

Larkfield Community Centre (A2)

To continue to deliver services to local women, to improve fitness, well-being, learning about beauty and alleviate social isolation by bringing them together.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust (A3)

To continue our vital work supporting people in Govanhill to get active, socialise, learn new skills and improve access through the provision of childcare, travel expenses and more.

Big Noise Govanhill (A4) Big Noise Govanhill October 2022 Holiday Club

Big Noise Govanhill’s October holiday club will provide free, fun and creative activities for young people in Govanhill, including music, crafts and outdoor games.

Govanhill Community Gardens/Remembrance Gardens (A5)

Govanhill Community Gardens Well-being Programme To provide a well-being programme within Govanhill Community Garden, including a gardening training programme, family fun day and men’s group programme of activities.

Active Life Club (A6)

To continue to deliver our activities, covering the costs of sessional staff and volunteers as well as venue hire, improving health and well-being in Govanhill

MILK (A7)

To facilitate a weekly volunteer run homework club for young people facing barriers to education. Particularly those from a low income background or with parents who do not speak English.

Povestry Democratic Citizenship Association (A8)

To organise 10 Folklore Open Mic events where members of the community can share part of their heritage. A book will be completed afterwards with different stories and images shared during the Open Mic Nights.

The Hidden Gardens (A9)

Come for 1 hour of gentle movement, with a break for tea and chat too. Tuesday Mornings in the Hidden Gardens, October to March.

Bike for Good – South Hub (A10)

Govanhill Gears is a bike youth club for young people living in Govanhill, 3 afternoons a week, which include led bike rides, mountain biking sessions and bike maintenance classes.

Music Broth (A11)

To provide 30 hours of musical workshops for young people to express their creativity in our inclusive welcoming library hub with fully subsidised option to take instruments home for further self-expression

Glasgow Zine Library (A12)

Glasgow Zine Library’s year -round Govanhill after-school Club will use arts and crafts to support young people in developing skills, self-expression, improving mental health and well-being, and tackling loneliness

Women on Wheels (A13)

We deliver cycling services (lessons, rides, maintenance classes and events). We now wish to add a loan bike library to our services to provide access to bikes for those who can now cycle.

How to vote:

  • Text / WhatsApp the project code (K1, K2, K3; A1, A2, A3 etc…) to 07919 364673.

  • You must include your name, flat number, house number and post code when you cast your vote

  • Only residents of Govanhill can vote, and get up to 5 votes for the Kickstart category and 5 votes for the Action category (you can only vote for each project once)

  • People in the same household have separate votes.

  • Vote by 5th October
