Street Style Icon(s)
When the weather turns grey, Govanhill turns up the colour. From bold beanies to coordinated canine accessories, we chat with the residents turning Victoria Road into a parade of personality. A celebration of dressing for joy, even when you're sprinting to get out of the rain.

On a dreich day so full of grey things, you’d be surprised at the amount of colour you can find in Govanhill. No matter what the weather, our fabulous community is out, parading down our own Victoria Road, as though it were a fashion week runway. The only difference was the models’ speed – rather than a saunter down the catwalk, it was a sprint to get out of the cold rain!
Our conversations were cut short, as a result, but then, a picture is worth a thousand words.

What influences your style?
Black makes me sad. I dress for the serotonin – it lifts me up. I need colour.
Who’s your style icon?
My gran always dressed smart. It didn’t matter what the occasion. She always had her wee necklace on, nice cardy, bit of lipstick. So I think always dressing well came from her.

Where do you get most of your clothes?
My [beanie] is from Thorn Records, a shop in Edinburgh. It’s just a Marks and Spencers coat – what can I say? The dogs are dressed from Etsy.
Who’s your style icon?
My grandmother. She wouldn’t have been seen dead without lipstick on. She used to go into hospital and she would grab her make-up bag before anything else. She would make sure when it was time for people to do their medical rounds that she would put on her rouge and her lipstick. She really looked after her appearance. She was incredibly well-dressed.
