We held an inaugural Open House event in the Community Newsroom, alongside The Ferret. Local residents, representatives from community organisations, and industry experts were invited along to hone in on and discuss a pressing issue affecting the local community and what can be done about it. This month we focused on and led a discussion on the housing crisis here in Scotland.

Loneliness and social isolation affect many people, even in our densely populated neighbourhood. For many these feelings were heightened during lockdowns. But Covid restrictions were lifted almost two years ago, and since then, there has been a resurgence of community spaces opening their doors to welcome people in. 

This year Greater Govanhill and The Ferret hosted the final Mind The Health Gap event as the year long project comes to a close. We summarised the key insights from the event below.

Govanhill…As I See It – Photography Exhibition was a culmination of film photos of people, places and buildings that bring the people of Govanhill joy and capture the spirit of their neighbourhood.

Benjamin Kritikos, exploring why there’s such a pressing need for local solutions powered by the people most affected by them, spoke with people from Community Renewal Trust Rom Romeha (‘For Roma, By Roma’), to find out how they are tackling health inequalities and improving the quality of life for the neighbourhoods Roma community.

Last Friday I hosted a live radio show with local people from the community. This is the story of how we managed to produce and present an hour long radio show together with the help of Greater Govanhill and Radio Buena Vida, and how it changed the way I feel about my performance anxiety.

The Roma community in and around Govanhill are celebrating the announcement of plans to establish a Roma cultural centre on Nithsdale Road. The centre will be run by Romano Lav, regular contributors to Greater Govanhill magazine.

Queer and trans identity can mean it isn’t always comfortable to be relaxed and authentic in a gardening environment, and having groups that don’t present this barrier can be important. Dylan Beck reports on the growth of  LGBTQI+ inclusive gardening groups in the Southside.
