In Pictures: The Govanhill International Parade & Carnival
Saturday saw the tenth annual Govanhill International Parade & Carnival. Over 1000 people took part in Govanhill Parade this year with many more attending the festival in Govanhill Park after. Photographer Rob Reid captured the day on film.
The parade was led by Frieda Ford, Bloco Dandara, Buff & Sheen and Govanhill Youth Club. It started at the Victoria Road Gates in Queen’s Park and wound its way up Victoria Road, Allison Street, Cathcart Road and Calder Street before finishing in Govanhill Park. This was followed by performances by Samba Sene & Diwan, Makongo, Bloco Dandara and Maz & the Phantasms, alongside dance by Nikkan Dance Academy and Romaine Cierhenia.
Govanhill International Festival runs until Sunday 16 August. This year the festival marks 25 years since campaigners took over the Govanhill Baths building, after Glasgow City Council closed the space. The festival is organised by Govanhill Baths Community Trust, which was formed following the building occupation. A street performance, film screenings, a community award and an exhibition will all commemorate the public protest which saved the building in 2001. Check out the full programme here.
