We held an inaugural Open House event in the Community Newsroom, alongside The Ferret. Local residents, representatives from community organisations, and industry experts were invited along to hone in on and discuss a pressing issue affecting the local community and what can be done about it. This month we focused on and led a discussion on the housing crisis here in Scotland.

Govanhill…As I See It – Photography Exhibition was a culmination of film photos of people, places and buildings that bring the people of Govanhill joy and capture the spirit of their neighbourhood.

Last Friday I hosted a live radio show with local people from the community. This is the story of how we managed to produce and present an hour long radio show together with the help of Greater Govanhill and Radio Buena Vida, and how it changed the way I feel about my performance anxiety.

The GALLANT Photo Map celebrates the wealth of community-based, sustainability-focused projects in and around Govanhill. People from the community working alongside photographers from Open Aye and Glasgow uni to map the area.

In the run-up to Refugee Festival Scotland 2023, Greater Govanhill ran a series of filmmaking workshops for New Scots that helped them to create short films on the stories that matter to them. Watch the shorts below.

The Scottish Refugee Festival Scotland is returning from 16-25 June with the theme of hope – ‘showcasing inspiring stories and sharing hopes and dreams for a better future’

In the midst of Winter last year, Greater Govanhill and The Ferret opened the doors to The Community Newsroom. To celebrate the occasion with the local community they were joined by Annette Street Drummers, a group of talented young kids who put on an energised performance to mark the occasion.

Loneliness and social isolation can affect so many people in Govanhill, but sometimes just talking to others can make a big difference. The Chatty Cafe scheme which has been adopted by local cafes is one small initiative aiming to support people.

What can be done to prevent littering and fly tipping in our lanes and back courts, when they are privately owned and the council does not take any responsibility? How can we make our neighbourhood cleaner and safer? Share your experiences, and tell us what you think should be done.

The collaborative storytelling project, called It’s Criminal, will work with a group of people with direct experience of the criminal justice system and with people from communities often scapegoated or blamed for crime.
